be your own PET, be your own PET
XL, 2006
If, while I was attending the Village Voice?s Siren Music Festival at Coney Island last summer, you had told me that the spastic punk insanity onstage would produce my favorite album in an eon I?d have said ...
... Hell yes! The lead singer just called the NYPD a ?gang of motherf---ers? right to their faces. And she?s a 17 year old girl.
Of course, there is a catch, finding their album is a bit of a trial. These Nashville TN native high-schoolers have consistently turned down major American label offers and have released their decidedly American punk rock album across the pond through British indie rock label XL. be your own PET alternates between melodic garage-punk a la The Yeah Yeah Yeahs minus Karen O?s ludes-induced drawling and all out epileptic speed thrash-punk. Jemina Pearl?s wailing squeal and snot nosed lyricism dance over the tight mathematic punk riffs of Jonas Stein, Nathan Vasquez?s sharp yet sludgey bass and Jamin Orrall?s room stomping drums to create little two minute bursts of sex-fueled rioting. If the Plasmatics and the Misfits had a clutch of babies they wouldn?t sound half as awesomely punk as be your own PET.
While subject matter runs the gamut from zombie world domination (?Ouch? ) and iciliy ironic condemnations of pop music (?Adventure?) to killing your boyfriend cause you don?t want a dog and he does (?Bog?).
?I?m guilty and I?m going in jail!/I?m on repeats and I?m going in jail!/I?m guilty and I?m going in jail!? damn right you are Jemina, but only for being too damn sexy. A
