A lethal dose of rock Kobra, a classic/Southern rock cover band, is getting ready to tear up Sadye’s Bar and Grille in Salem on Saturday, Jan. 26. “I’ve always had a thing for naming bands after animals,” said vocalist and guitarist Jason Michelson. “We were sitting around thinking about names, and I wanted to convey that we delivered a lethal dose of rock.” Lethal plus animal equaled Kobra, said Michelson, with the “k” added to “give it that extra little spin.” Proudly playing the best of AC/DC, Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, and Quiet Riot, Kobra aims to be a loud party band delivering juiced-up power chords. And yes, Kobra plays “Freebird.” The band includes Newton’s Michelson on lead vocals and guitar, David Lotito on guitar, Plaistow’s Denney Healy on Bass, and newcomer Paul Husson on drums. With his sleeveless tees, baseball cap, Les Paul guitar and vintage amps, Michelson looks every bit the part of a Southern rock front man, and lists his influences as Van Halen, Zakk Wylde, and Guns N Roses. The rest of the band has deep roots in the Boston music scene. Healy played bass in the 1970s with Axe, a band that played with some of the day’s bigger blues and country acts out there. Since then, he’s had stints with Cain Armageddon, Trixx and Running Late. Husson’s work as a drummer dates back to the ’70s as well, but he is best known for his current work with the White Collar Hitmen. Husson joined the band in August of last year. Lotito, meanwhile, has played with the likes of Armageddon, New Breed and Mercury during the late ’80s and ’90s. While the band plays classic rock, it’s the interplay between himself and Lotito that gives the band its Southern rock flavor. “Not many other bands have that back-and-forth like we do,” Michelson said. Though the band has roots in southern New Hampshire, it primarily plays at Bevie B’s at Sailsbury Beach. “We pack that place to the gills,” said Michelson, saying that when played correctly, it is hard for any rock audience to fail to appreciate Skynyrd or AC/DC. “We play good old ass-kicking rock and roll,” Michelson said. “That’s it.”
