Leadership Greater Nashua and Pride
support NH’s Military Members
On Saturday July 17, 2004, the Leadership Greater Nashua (LGN) class
will host family members of NH’s service members who are supporting
Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom for a day of
food, fun and a Nashua Pride baseball game.
Each year, LGN chooses a project to benefit the community as the
culmination of their 10-month program.
Food and activities start at 3 p.m. at Holman Stadium and include kids’
corner, kids’ face painting, a clown, the National Guard Color Guard,
the 39th Army Rock Band, a Humvee, a cannon, and a static display of a
Black Hawk helicopter from the NH Army National Guard at the stadium.
There will also be player autographs and photograph booths. Confirmed
speakers include Governor Benson, Nashua Mayor Streeter, and the
current Mrs. New Hampshire, Dr. Stephanie Foisy Mills, whose husband is
on active duty and serving overseas. The afternoon will conclude with
attendance at the 6:35 p.m. baseball game against the Bridgeport
Bluefish. Funds have been raised to cover the cost of the day’s
activities, and the Nashua Pride has generously donated the families’
tickets. The Nashua Pride is also donating $3 from every ticket sold
from the Bridgeport game to benefit the Chaplain’s Emergency Relief
Fund, which helps families of military members who are in financial
need due to an emergency.
To donate to the Chaplain’s Emergency Relief Fund, call the NH National
Guard Chaplain’s Office at 227-1560. For more information about LGN,

Boys & Girls Club staff win
program awards
Three professional staff at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua
won program awards from the Yankee Chapter of the Association of Boys
& Girls Clubs Professionals. From 35 entries, the Nashua staff’s
programs won three of the six categories based on each program’s
creativity, results and strength in supporting youth development.
Teen Director Michael Branc’s program, “The Real Deal,” won the Health
and Life Skills award. The yearly program addresses teen girls’ need to
explore and learn more about women’s issues in a safe and positive
setting. The girls elect officers, set objectives, collaborate with
community partners like the Nashua Police, and come together to learn
about community service, health, dating, personal protection and
education. The program’s goal is to get teen girls working together to
empower themselves and others through education, social consciousness
and community action.
Individual Services Director Mario Pena’s program, “Los Amigos
Conference on Higher Education,” won the Education and Career
Development award. The weekend conference held at Daniel Webster
College in May, 2004, exposed Hispanic teens to the college experience
and helped them gain valuable information to overcome obstacles in
pursuing higher education. “My research showed that few New Hampshire
Hispanic youth were taking advantage of higher education
opportunities,” said Pena, himself a Club almunus and a college
graduate, now pursuing his Masters Degree.
Family Resource Coordinator Stephanie Couture’s program, “After School
Program at the Academy of Learning and Technology,” won the Membership
Outreach award. The program is a collaboration with the 21st Century
After School Programs and encourages the students who attend Nashua’s
alternative middle school to join the Club and participate in daily
positive, safe and life enhancing programs after school. The program,
apparently, attracted 42 per cent of the ALT students to Club’s youth
development program and engaged them in collaborative community service.
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua annually serves about 2,400
boys and girls ages 6-18 in Nashua and surrounding towns and reaches
another 8,000 youngster in the community with a variety of programs and
wholesome activities to build character, improve academic performance,
develop a moral compass and experience the joys of childhood. Called
“The Positive Place for Kids,” the Club is staffed with professional,
caring adults and is open to all children. Membership is $15 a year.
