Your guide to the season in Nashua

While it’s nice to drive to the beach, get a tan and read “Indulgence Weekly” or whatever has an obese picture of Kirstie Alley on the cover this week, there is plenty going on in Nashua right under your sunburned nose.

Here is a heads-up on some of the summer activities that Nashua has to offer. Get your friends together and participate in any number of the activities below. There is something here for everyone.

June
25 Make a big splash this summer by visiting any of Nashua’s three swimming pools: Centennial Pool on Sargent Avenue behind Holman Stadium, Rotary Pool on Cleveland Street next to Fairgrounds Elementary School and the Crown Hill Pool on Burke Street. The pools are open Monday-Friday 1-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m, Saturday 1-8 p.m. and Sunday 1-6 p.m. Swim lessons are July 26-August 13,  9a.m.-noon Monday-Friday; registration for the second session is held July 21 and 22 at 9 a.m.

25 The Peacock Players improv troupe Organized Chaos 4 will unorganize a series of kooky skits and games in a new comical format at the Court Street Theater. There will also be a special showing of On the Verge, the Peacock Players’ recent entry in the One-Act Festival. 7 p.m., $7 adults, $5 students. Call 889-2330 or log on to www.peacockplayers.org.

28  The Nashua Public Library will host open summer storytimes and puppet shows every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Bedtime storytimes are held Thursday evenings at 7 pm. No registration is required. Call 589-4600 or visit www.nashua.lib.nh.us.

28  Nashua Pride vs. Somerset Patriots at 6:35 p.m. at historic Holman Stadium. If you miss this game, don’t worry—there are plenty more throughout the summer. The Nashua Pride will hold 48 home games at Holman Stadium from June 28 through September 19. Every Monday through Wednesday is Family Night, when any kid sporting a baseball uniform gets $2 off reserved seats. July 10-12, the Pride battle the Pennsylvania Road Warriors while World Famous Monkey Boy entertains the crowd. Not familiar with Monkey Boy? Monkey Boy is a touring mascot within the minor league who tantalizes the crowd with his ape-like antics. Monkey Boy promises no horsing around.

28 boulder morty’s Rock Climbing offers an Adventure Day Camp June 28-September 6. Ages 8-14 can enjoy indoor and outdoor rock climbing for every skill level along with daily field trips to exciting outdoor sites. boulder morty’s also offers safety instruction, daily swimming, challenging games, and unique and creative art projects. There are weeklong sessions throughout the summer and tuition includes an unlimited summer membership at boulder morty’s. Hours are Tuesday 5-10 p.m., Wednesday-Friday 4-10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Prices vary depending on the program. Call 886-6789 or visit www.bouldermortys.com.

29 Too much fun in the sun? Take a day off and go bowling at Leda Lanes at 340 Amherst Street. Monday-Friday before 5 p.m. each game is only $2.50. Regular hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-midnight, $3.00 per game and $1.50 per shoe rental. Throw a few strikes while staying out of the sun. Call 889-4884 for more information.

All Month:
The Nashua Parks & Recreation Department will sponsor a Walking Program this summer for all interested walkers. The Walking Program will be offered every Tuesday and Friday morning at 9 a.m. from now until August 27. Three different walking trails will be used, including Mine Falls, Railroad Trail, & Beaver Brook Association in Hollis. Walkers of all abilities are welcome and encouraged to participate to promote good health and physical activity. There is no fee for the Walking Program. July
2 Margaritas Mexican Restaurant will hold Full Moon Margarita Madness on July 2, with discounted food and margaritas as well as promotional giveaways and contests. Five percent of the evenings’ lounge sales will be donated to charity, so you’ll be drinking for a good cause. There is also a Full Moon July 31. Call 883-0996 for more information.

4 The Fourth of July Celebration of SummerFun will be held at Holman Stadium. The day begins with Field Day for the kids, 11-2 p.m., filled with carnival rides, a bounce-house, cotton candy, and sno-cones followed by a free picnic lunch at 1:30. Spartans Drum & Bugle band will perform at 8:30 p.m. and there will be a special event involving  WWII veterans and Children from Chernobyl followed by a spectacular fireworks display at 9:15 p.m.

6 Nashua Farmers’ Market opens July 6 at 48 West Hollis St. and will be open every Tuesday, July-October, 3-6 p.m. The Farmers’ Market offers fruits, herbs, vegetables, jams, jellies and maple syrup, but not like you’ll find at the grocery store. Call 672-5309 for more information.

6 Tuesdays are 4 Teens at the Nashua Public Library will hold events for teens (age 13-17) selected Tuesdays at 4 p.m. throughout the summer. Here’s the lineup of activities. July 6, Scary Movie 3. July 27, meet a video game designer to find out what it’s like to design video games, and bring some CDs or video games to swap with other kids. August 3, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, starring Lindsay Lohan. August 31, end-of-the-year pizza party. Fill out a survey to tell us what you want at your library, and meet Jenn, the new YA librarian. The library is located at 2 Court Street. 7 Let’s all go to the movies. The Milford Drive-In will show Anchorman, starring Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Christina Applegate and Paul Rudd. The Box Office will open at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 7:15 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. The movies start at dusk. Other movies to be shown are Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement on August 1, Alien vs. Predator on August 8 and The Exorcist: The Beginning on August 20. 8 The New England Academy of Music and Dance presents Studio 57...A Cabaret, an entertainment extravaganza unlike anything you’ve ever seen. The show begins July 8 at 9 p.m. at Factory 57 on Factory Street and will run every Thursday until the end of the summer. Admission is $7. Call 889-6580 for more information or visit www.neamd.org.

10 The Nashua Theatre Guild will perform  Shakesperience, billed as Shakespeare with shock value, in Greeley Park July 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 3 p.m. Admission is free so bring the whole family. For more information, call 320-2530 or visit http://nashuatheatreguild.org/

12 The Nashua Symphony Choral Society (NSCS) once again invites all interested individuals to participate in the popular Monday evening “Summer Sings” in the air-conditioned comfort of the Nashua Baptist Church, Broad Street. This varied series, open to all who enjoy vocalizing, features a broad repertoire, which will be featured on eight dates from now until August 23 and includes the music of Mozart, Brahms, and Handel. All NSCS Summer Sings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and a $7.00-per-person fee is charged per night. Scores will be provided, but singers are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. 17 The Fairy Tale Festival will take place at Greeley Park Bandshell from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be all-day children’s activities and all-day WZID Rolling Radio, followed by Dragon’s Tale performance at 1 p.m. and the City of Roses musical at 7 p.m.

19 How’s your backhand? That’s what I thought. Instructors Scott MacDougald and Dave Osborne offer tennis lessons at Sargent Ave. Courts behind Holman Stadium. Youth Tennis Lessons, ages 6-10, are July 19-24, 1-2 p.m. Session One, for ages 11-16, is July 5-22; Session Two is August 2-19, 9 a.m. for beginners, 10 a.m. for advanced beginners and 11 a.m. for intermediate lessons. Adult lessons are July 19-24, 6-7 p.m. for beginners, and 7-8 p.m. for intermediates. Call 589-3370 to sign up today.

22 The Nashua Public Library will hold a vocal concert July 22 at 7 p.m. There will be a concert featuring a performance by the Overdrive barbershop quartet and another by members of New England Voices in Harmony. The concert will be held outdoors on the library plaza at 2 Court St. In the event of rain, it will be held indoors in the Music, Art, and Media Department. It is free and open to the public. 23 The Teen Actorsingers will perform The Wiz July 23-24 at 8 p.m., July 25 at 2 p.m., July 30-31 at 8 p.m. and August 1 at 2 p.m. at the Court Street Theatre. Beware Evillene and the those weird motorcycle monkeys! Tickets are $12 center stage and $10 side seats. For tickets please call 320-1870.  

24 Yellow Taxi will present the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Proof July 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the bandshell in Greeley Park. Admission is free. Proof is about family relationships and responsibilities, about love and guilt, vulnerability and trust, and death and loss. 29 The Zoo is returning to Boston Billiards at 55 Northeastern Blvd. July 29, August 19 and September 9. The Zoo is a five-member high-energy cover band worthy of the MTV Ultimate Cover Band Award.  Music starts around 9 p.m. For more information, call 595-2121

All Month:
Paddle up and down the Nashua River in a canoe. The Nashua River provides scenery, wildlife, and a little summer exercise while you soak up those rays. You will, of course, have to bring your own canoe. Where to launch? Tilton Street, off Rte. 130 (Broad Street): watch out for the Mine Falls Dam, you’ll have to take-out at a launch upstream of old brick powerhouse. Mine Falls Dam launch: you can also launch behind Nashua Public Works Department (DPW) off Riverside Street and Rte. 111; follow DPW signs to dirt road around DPW yard, which leads to launch above dam. Main Street Bridge launch: off Franklin and Main Streets; there is a small field near a pillared colonial building and you can only launch between Mine Falls and Jackson Falls Dam, but watch out for Jackson Falls Dam, you’ll have to take-out on the left of the Main St. Launch. Mill Pond: at Riverside St. off Rte. 111, there is access to the canal. 5  Jazz vocalist Wendee Glick will give a free performance at the Concert on the Plaza at 7 p.m. at the Nashua Public Library. Glick’s influences include jazz legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Anita O’Day, and June Christy.

5 The Second Annual Peacock Family Show presents The Music Man Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. August 5-8. 7 The League of New Hampshire Craftsman will put on their 71st Annual Fair in Mt. Sunapee Resort in Newbury August 7-14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Join artists from all over New Hampshire as they display their work along with 200 individual craft booths. There will be a musem- quality Living with Craft exhibit in addition to a new Sculpture Garden exhibit. With demonstrations, childrens’ workshops, and performances by area musicians, the League of New Hampshire Craftsman is sure to put on a good show. 11 A Bach’s Lunch Concert, complete with spirit fiddle, traditional folk, fiddle and guitar, will be held at the Nashua Public Library at noon followed by a dance performance by the Boys & Girls Club at Los Amigos Park at 6 p.m. The Silver Lining Chours will take place at 7 p.m. at the Greeley Park Bandshell while Shannachie, a musical, will take place in Deschenes Oval at Railroad Square also at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.gonashua.com.
 
14 The Nashua Area Artists’ Association presents the 50th Annual Greeley Park Art Show, August 14-15, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come join some 100 local artists while they exhibit their work. There will be demonstrations by woodturners, live music by George Parker, and an art competition for all artists, young and old. Artistic high school seniors should also attend as there are two $1000 scholarships available for seniors attending art school in the fall. 20 Chimera Gallery will hold Pictures at an Exhibit on August 20. Join noted poet Jonah Winter in a collabnoration with Manchester-based photographer Kevin Spiro as they present an evening of poetry-reading and gallery-gazing. Call 943-3248 for more information.

23 The City of Nashua Parks and Recreation Department will host an Ice Hockey Camp August 23-27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Boys and girls ages 8-15 can hit the ice and learn hockey basics at the Conway Ice Center behind the Nashua Police Station. The cost is $100 for residents/ $125 for non-residents. Registration for ice hockey is available now at the recreation office at Greeley Park. The city also offers baseball, track and field, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, lacrosse, field hockey, soccer, skateboarding, theater, and football camps throughout the summer. All Month
For all you 411 skater kids who like to ollie, grind and fakie, bring your boards and head over to David W. Deane Skatepark on Bridge Street. This skatepark is one of the best in the area and has a 6 to 11 foot traditional bowl, street course, straight banks, ledges, rails, hips, bowled corners, and extensions. The facility is mainly composed of concrete. Helmet and pads required. 

September
10 The New England Academy of Music and Dance puts on W;t at the 14 Court Street Theatre. W;t is a “dazzling and humane play you will remember till your daying day,” according to John Simon of New York magazine. The production runs Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. and Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Call 889-6580 for more information or visit www.neamd.org

16 The Nashua Theatre Guild will put on its second performance of the summer with A Midsummer Night’s Dream Sept. 16-19 at the Main Stage Theater.

25 Bow to your partner, it’s the Nashua Country Fair featuring The Great American Cow Maneuver. This year’s fair will include games for kids, entertainment, raffles, crafts, a farmers’ market, Cow Maneuver, the 4th Annual Nashua Country Fair Soccer Tournament and other fun- filled activities for the whole family. The Country Fair begins Sept. 25, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. New activities include pony and Segway rides, bubble gum blowing contests, and rock climbing.
