Pinings: Move Back Home?
by
Sherry Hughes
Dear Sherry,
My mom and dad really want me to move back home with them. I am
resisting because I like living on my own, but they are putting the
pressure on. I dropped out of college because I had a job I really liked
and thought it would be something I could do for a long time. After I
got laid off, I had a hard time finding another job. I finally did, but
it doesn?t pay much. My parents have lent me money, but they say it
would be a better idea for me to move home, go back to school and save
money.
I agree that it?s a good idea, but I?m 20 now and don?t think I can live
with them. I have a boyfriend and they hate him (because he doesn?t have
a job and lives with his mom, they think he?s lazy). I want to see my
boyfriend, and I want to keep my apartment.
Ideas?

Dear Cidney,
I?m twice your age, so I think moving home is a good, smart idea. Going
back to school is a good plan too, as is saving money. I also dropped
out of school in lieu of a job and cash in my pocket and a place to call
my own. It wasn?t all roses, but it worked out. I had two jobs
sometimes, no car for a few years, and roommates here and there when I
needed to. You can do all of the things you want to do without moving
home, but it?s going to be very challenging. You may need to sacrifice a
lot of the things you would like ? new clothes, trips, concerts. But if
you are willing to be diligent and hardworking, you can do it.
An easier way to go, at least financially, is to stay with your folks. I
understand how you feel, though. It might make the most practical sense,
but it may be the most taxing emotionally.
I
only have a good relationship with my parents because I don?t live with
them.
Good luck.
