I really didn’t expect to talk about any more metal for a while, but this just squeaked in before the big-Xmas-release-rush (anyone want the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack CD?). Yes, squeaked in and then started screaming and spazzing like Baroness’s psycho kid brother, and wow dudes, we have a winner. The drummer is Chris Pennie, formerly of Dillinger Escape Plan and now of Coheed & Cambria, and holy crow, small world, singer Ron Scalzo is in reality small-potatoes electro guy Q*Ball, whom I’ve been avoiding since giving him a mercy review back a few years ago which somehow inspired him to haunt my emailbox worse than Classmates.com.
But never mind namedropping, it wouldn’t matter if these guys were the Mitt Romney Mormon Tabernacle Quintet. This is groundbreaking tech-thrash-doom stuff, ladies and germs, like an android Dillinger Escape Plan entered into a contest to out-anger Ministry’s closeout song on Hurt Locker and actually winning. Anyway, right, when they’re not being (a much refined and improved) DEP, or Baroness’s psycho kid brother, or chasing Slayer around with a chainsaw, they’re ripping off the best part of Minus the Bear’s last album (on “Snakeface”). What are you sitting there for — get to buying this someplace, mush mush.
