Aaron Goldberg, The Now (Sunnyside Records)

If you’re looking for festive stuff without all the Santa Claus, there’s nothing like a little piano jazz, especially when it’s done this exquisitely. Goldberg has played with Wynton Marsalis and Joshua Redman among others, but his preferred solo setup is a trio, here with his favorite rhythm section cronies, drummer Eric Harland and bassist Reuben Rogers. There are a lot of Spanish-sounding titles, but the version of traditional Haitian song “Yo Yo” is by far the most salsa-ized thing I noticed; most of the tracklist is a blow-for-blow trade-off of one dinner-piano thing followed by whatever Goldberg feels like stretching out on, for instance the freak-speed interplay between Goldberg and Harland on “Background Music” and the time-signature moves on “Francisca,” which reads like a scholarly mashup of different-minded bars. Deeply urban and very crisp-sounding, improvisational moments fitting into their assigned spaces with jaw-dropping dexterity. A Eric W. Saeger
