Brews and brunches
Animal organizations host spring fundraisers

Breaking free from the typical benefit dinner in favor of more relaxed and quirky events, two local organizations dedicated to helping animals are hosting springtime foodie fundraisers — one in a brewery and one for brunch.

“[People are] coming out of the hibernation of winter so why not offer a great way to get out and enjoy?” Lori Taylor, Pope Memorial SPCA director of marketing and development, said in a phone interview.

Paws for Compassion
Pope Memorial SPCA of Concord-Merrimack County is holding the second annual Paws for Compassion on Sunday, May 1, serving up interactive features in addition to brunch.
“[Brunch] isn’t done by everyone and we also realized that there [are] a good amount of supporters who [feel that] maybe the gala or dinner gets to be too late at night or they prefer the lighter brunch menu and options as opposed to a full sit-down meeting,” she said.
To keep with the fun and light theme, Paws for Compassion includes a silent auction, a game of “heads or tails” led by emcee Nazzy from WLNH and a social hour where folks can visit with animals up for adoption.
Taylor noted they’ll also highlight certain animals and their stories, some of which have already been adopted. Adoptive families will also be onsite and available to chat about the benefits of adopting a pet and their experiences with Pope Memorial SPCA of Concord-Merrimack County.
“Last year a whole bunch of puppies and kittens came out. Everyone can interact while we have the silent auction,” Taylor said.
Next, folks will head into the ballroom to hear from guest speaker Bruce Zeman and his dachshund sidekick Hobbes while enjoying a locally sourced menu of pastry, fruit, quiche, French toast,  pancakes, Caesar salad, basil pesto ravioli and spiraled ham.
“They are working with a couple locally sourced bakeries and other caterers from the area so everything is … as local as possible,” Taylor said. “Desserts … will be more fresh cakes and tarts than traditional chocolate cakes and whatnot.”

Sips for Strays
Change things up for your midweek happy hour in favor of supporting a good cause during Sips for Strays beer tasting on Wednesday, May 4, which has Animal Allies partnering with Milly’s Tavern for the seventh year. Folks are invited to get together for a laid-back silent auction and evening of sampling Milly’s Tavern brews.
“You can get the different samples of Milly’s brews or you can get two full glasses of whatever brew you like,” event organizer Kathy Peirce said in a phone interview.
“Munchies and appetizers” will be available, she said, though there is no formal meal or presentation. Each guest is given 10 drink coupons, which could be used for a handful of small samples or as the equivalent of two full glasses.
Though the beer tasting is the focus of the fundraiser, Peirce said the casual event is designed for any folks who want to stop by, bid on silent auction items like show tickets and gift certificates, and have a relaxed time.
“We don't have any speakers or set schedule. We just kind of keep it low key,” she said. “It’s enjoying each other's company.”
