Here Come the Mummies, Cryptic

 5/23/2013 - If Electric Six had a slightly better sense of humor and more horns, it’d probably be a lot like this, at least on the funk side. They’re six albums into their oeuvre; they play funk while dressed up as mummies, and yet this the first I’ve heard of them — me, a longtime monster fan who gave high grades to Zombina & The Skeletones mostly on the strength of their name. They do tend to waver a bit from their bread-and-butter Al Green/Parliament roots: album opener “You Know The Drill” is total ’70s Hot Chocolate vibe, yes, but the vocals can get Doobie Brothers-ish (“Chaperone”), the music POD-nu-metal-ish (“Devil Better Run”) and the salsa Miami Sound Machine-ish (“Infinity”).  Fun stuff, good sound and diversity. A-
