Look for the leprechaun
Intown Manchester hosts March scavenger hunt

You may not find a pot of gold this year, but if you’re hanging around downtown Manchester, you might find a leprechaun.

Throughout the month of March, Intown Manchester is holding a scavenger hunt to find Seamus the Leprechaun, a small knickknack that will be hidden in various downtown businesses.
“In 2012 we started a contest for the month of December with Morty the Elf, and we’ve been doing it every year since,” said Julia Whitney, marketing coordinator of Intown Manchester. “This year we decided to introduce Seamus the Leprechaun for the month of March. There’s a great [St. Patrick’s Day] parade every year downtown and the bars always do crazy, fun St. Pat’s celebrations, so we figured, let’s tap into that. Why not?”
Monday through Friday, Intown will release clues about Seamus’ whereabouts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (@intownmanch). The clues will vary in difficulty. Whitney said that with the easier clues, Morty was usually found within two or three hours of the clue posting. If he wasn’t found by the next day, Intown posted the clues again and encouraged everyone to keep trying.
“For Queen City Cupcakes we had one that said, ‘Morty has a hankering for something sweet. You’ll find him snacking on a frosted treat!’ said Whitney. “The next day we hid him at Runner’s Alley and said, ‘When it comes to sweets, this elf is a hog. To work off those treats, he’ll be going for a jog!’ We try to make them into a fun little story.”
Trixie Vazquez, Intown office coordinator, comes up with the clues. She said she starts with what the business is known for, then creates a quirky rhyme from there. Some businesses send in their own clue suggestions as well.
“This past year [with Morty] we wanted to add an element of fun and mystery, so we started the rhyming clues,” said Vazquez. “I try to keep them a bit ambiguous, but they tend to be pretty easy to solve. We’re going to keep the rhyming clues for Seamus, but I’ll have to tap in to my inner Dr. Seuss.”
Seamus is only a few inches tall and can be anywhere around the shop where he is hiding. He won’t be too difficult to find, but he won’t be in plain sight either. If you find him, alert a store employee right away to receive your prize.
The prize will be different for each business. Queen City Cupcakes awarded the winner who found Morty with cupcakes. Other businesses awarded gift cards.
“It’s super fun and interactive for the businesses because they get to participate in finding a hiding spot and picking a prize,” said Whitney. “They love it as much as we do.”
Whitney encourages willing winners, especially kids, to take a picture with Seamus and send it to Intown so they can post it on social media.
“It’s a fun way for people to interact with downtown and pop into places they haven’t been before,” said Whitney. “Morty has been really successful, so we are excited to bring another little guy into downtown and have a fun hide-and-seek with a leprechaun.”
