Michael Campagna, Moments
Challenge Records, Dec. 6

12/22/11
By Eric Saeger news@hippopress.com

UMiami grad Campagna is on his second LP as a composer/bandleader, and although this can be a bit of a chore to follow, his sax flows so exquisitely that you can forgive the more off-the-cuff-sounding passages (though touted as a pretty serious guy, he does have his Mingus-ish indulgences). His interplay with trumpet-player Michael Rodriguez isn’t always hand-in-glove, though Rodriguez does a good job of keeping up, lending a Night Passages-era Weather Report sound to the fluffier stuff. Things get mathematical in “Journeys,” piano-bar (with operatic flourishes) in “Celestial Romance,” this sort of thing, but the woozy weirdness of “Midnight Whistle” will come off as rude if you’re simply trying to chill.
