On the Job with Carl Harmon
Owner of Harmon Hill Farms

07/01/15

Carl Harmon and his wife Marlene opened Harmon Hill Farms in Hudson in 2001 after growing more plants than they had the space for. Today, they have over 3,500 varieties of daylilies on display and 1,800 for sale, as well as hostas and other plants. The farm’s peak blooming season is mid July.

Explain in one sentence what your current job is.

I provide the newest, best-performing daylilies to local markets and across the U.S.

How long have you worked there?

We started it in 2001.

How did you get interested in this field?

I was always a gardener, but I saw my first large daylily operation down at Heritage Museum [& Gardens] in Cape Cod, and shortly thereafter, I became hooked on growing daylilies.

What kind of education or training did you need for this job?

I had no specialized training. Just traveling to other locations and talking to lots of people, getting experience and learning from mistakes and successes.

How did you find your current job?

Well, we got to the point where we were growing so many plants and [doing it] so well that we had to do something with all the extra plants, so we decided to start selling them to the public.

What’s the best piece of work-related advice anyone’s ever given you?

Grow the plants the best you can and try to make customers happy.

What do you wish you’d known at the beginning of your career?

It’s hard to get walk-in traffic in this business.
What is your typical at-work uniform?

A T-shirt, shorts, sneakers and a good hat.

What was the first job you ever had?

Working at Garrison Farm in Hudson when I was 13.
