Petra Haden, Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out (Bar/None Records)

Petra Haden, Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out (Bar/None Records)
CD Reviews: April 21, 2016

In the latest breaking news from Mars, Bar/None is re-releasing this 2005 novelty record on vinyl and download. It is what it is, the original Who LP re-imagined as an a cappella exercise, the journeyman quirk-rocker’s voice being the only instrument on board here. If you’re not aware of this record’s origin, Haden, the same New York singer-violinist who’s contributed to the Decemberists, Foo Fighters and Green Day among others, was given an old eight-track recorder by Mike Watt of Minutemen, and on the tape itself was one track comprised of the original Who album, with the remaining seven tracks still empty, waiting for Haden to fill them up with vocal renderings of the guitar and voice parts. It’s nicely done for what it is, and, keeping in mind that aside from a few songs, the original record itself was pretty much a goof, it’s almost a surprise that it took so long for this to be attempted. She even does all the “Heinz Baked Beans” shticks, but beyond that, the standard “I Can See for Miles” will elicit smiles from oldsters for sure. A-
