Prefuse 73, Rivington Nao Rio (Temporary Residence Records)

DJ Guillermo S. Herren has released a ton of stuff under his Prefuse 73 alias, perhaps most popularly 2011’s Only She Chapters, which was girl-powered by such voices as Zola Jesus and Shara Worden. As would be his wont, the vocal-assisted songs from his first LP in four years feature males, with Milo & Busdriver adding frenetic alt-hiphop lines (“140 Jabs Interlude”) and Helado Negro Bone-Thugs-ing his way around a pile of Postal Service glitch-tech wreckage (“See More Than Just Stars”). There’s certainly a need to add acquired-taste caveats to an album like this, which has a lot of stopping and starting between prole-accessible beat-age and chopped/screwed/system-crash hiphop/IDM, but there’s nothing wrong with trying to wrap your head around stuff like this if you’ve nothing better to do, never mind that anyone with ears would be rewarded for slogging through all the malfunctioning machinery upon hearing the darkly comic soul of the Sam Dew-guested “Infrared.” A- Eric W.
