Treasure Hunt: April 30, 2015

04/30/15
By Donna Welch

  Dear Donna,

Here’s a picture of the painting by “RogerS” as well as a picture of the column that featured a question about the artist. Seems like the artist had a thing for rural winter scenes with cozy-looking little cabins!

Hope the info is useful, whether to you or to the person who wrote to you. If you should hear anything further about the artist, please let me know, as I am also interested in any information I can find on him or her.

Mike

Dear Mike,

As a refresher, the original letter-writer asked me to determine a value and possibly figure out who the artist was of a painting very similar to this. The photo in the first article almost could have been a print, so I told the person to have it looked at to confirm it was a painting.

After seeing yours, I now believe they are both paintings, and you are right, they are very similar in content and design. If the frame on yours is original, I would say now that the dates of these would be in the late 1850s to 1970s, judging by the style of the frame.

I tried to come up with the artist again, and still found no results. As I said the first time, there are so many unknown artists out there and paintings that are not valued on the artist but rather the content and quality. So, to sum up your painting as well as the first, I think that they both would be in the $100 range for a buyer who would enjoy the scene.

It would be nice to think this is a New England scene with all the snow.
